Movember Pale

Brewed on: November 13, 2012
Tasting on: January 26, 2013

Appearance: Fluffy head, Copperish / Mahogany-like

Aroma: Oranges, Citrus, Bits of lemon

Taste: Clean bitterness, small amount of pine, citra hops come through a bit, kinda biscuitty, finishes with Caramel, and resin.

Overall Impression / Improvements: Decent APA, easy drinking. I probably would substitute the hops. I was aiming for a beer that was west coast style but I dont think this hit it. Maybe more late edition hops. Remove the citra. Possibly just use cascade only? I think this APA came out too dark. Probably knock back the C60 and use C30 instead, bring out more caramel and less resin flavour.

Afternoon American Brown Ale

Brewed this on November 3, 2012.
Tasting from January 25, 2013

Appearance: Dark with reddish hues when held to the light. Creamy french mocha-vanilla-like head. Slightly lacy in the head.

Aroma: Chocolate, toffee, toasted vanilla almost

Taste: Chocolate, biscuit, bread, slight spice, balanced, bitterness kicks in the finish, slightly grassy in the finish, not heavy. Finish also leaves a very suttle lingering coffee taste in your mouth. Flavours have a pleasant fluffiness to them.

Overall impression: I enjoyed this american brown a lot. It's nicely balanced, the flavours seem to compliment each other well. No one flavour over powers the other.

Improvements: I think next time using magnum for bittering and use chinook at maybe 45 min or 35 min. maybe dry hop next time see what happens.

Suckit! Belgian Blonde first taste

My entry for the garrison brewing contest is a Belgian blonde at 7% ABV. First sample from the keg was still young. Crisp clean and good character from the Ardennes yeast. Finish is dry but not too dry. I think it's nicely balanced and would make a good summer smasher. The carbonation isn't as full as normal Belgians, so ill likely have to turn up the CO2 some more.

Thus far I like it and even if it doesn't win I would brew it again.

Btw there is 500ml of starsan in this brew which came from the blow off jar during a hard crash cool. I guess hard crash cooling creates a vacuum and will suck up the blow off jar.

Lemon Pineapple Blonde

Well its been a while since i blogged. i now have an app to publish from my phone so will be much easier. Bought a pineapple from Costco and also had some lemon peel from the last brewnosers group buy, so I decided to brew a lemon pineapple blonde beer. This brew contained 2 row, 5% crystal 15, %2 carapils, citra, and saaz hops.

Mashed for 75 minutes biab and reached 83% mash efficiency and 77% efficiency. OG came out at 1.046 (expected 1.044) and batch size ~23 litres. Overall was a good brew day. Propane tank seemed to quit at 45 min into the boil even though it was refilled the week prior. Also forgot to add Irish moss, dough!

Tasting a sample of the final result. Was very sweet and had a good lemon aroma and some pineapple as well, but very little pineapple taste. Once fermented I may add some more pineapple to the secondary or keg.

Fermenting this at around 18 degrees.
